  •  I began this diary with the idea that the military (6+ / 0-)

    would be my "third" prong. But it doesn't appear that this common wisdom is true anymore. The statistics suggest a uniform split in military enlistment among different socio-economic levels. My explanation for this is that the military really requires a high school degree in order for a person to enlist these days, and kids born into abject poverty are much more likely to drop out (GEDs not counting) of high school before they get there. This suppresses the numbers of truly poor in the military.

    Lower middle class kids are the primary target of the military these days, and the military offers an illusionary opportunity at a better life for kids who can almost taste it. The problem is that in order to receive that G.I. Bill and many of those benefits, you have to put yourself at significant risk for PTSD, which you will have little help dealing with once you return home.
