  •  I always tip about 20 to 25 percent. I did tip 0 (5+ / 0-)

once though. Well, I didn't because a friend was paying for the dinner. And I thought the tip was well deserved (I mean, not deserved) in the event. It was at an upscale place in Park City, UT. My friend and his wife had already eaten a fair amount that day and decided to split a meal. My wife and I were going to each have a meal, though. But the prospect of only getting tips on about $150 instead of about $200 worth of meal really ticked off the waiter. You could just see it in his face after we two ordered and my friend said they were going to split a meal. We sat  for an hour after that while other diners came and went, some being served by that waiter. Eventually, after a couple or three complaints to management, we ate. My friend left no tip that time. I suppose the waiter had to make do with maybe 10 percent less that night than he might have, he wasn't really hurting. For all I know he might have thought his revenge was worth $30 or so.

One other time a waitress actually tried to steal $5 from my change, so she got no tip.

Those are the only two times in my life that I have been a party to not leaving a tip, and that encompasses about 45 or 50 years of restaurant meals.

    Moderation in most things.
