in love with characters in the same post just as I was thinking back to reading Brothers Karamazov in high school and being a little in love with most of the brothers--not Smerdyakov, of course! Mitya was my favorite. I wonder how I would feel if I re-read it now.

And Daniel Deronda--well, he is so hot! ;)

But I'm a romance writer, so I'm pretty much always a little in love with some character (or several).

    •  Yes, Mitya's a sweetheart - similar to Myshkin, (4+ / 0-)

a bit too good for this world.

I'm glad you love your characters. Did you know Tolstoy found Anna K. pretty horrible when he started her book? I guess she really grew on him. Even when he wasn't loving them, he respected his characters, gave them their head.

I was thinking of Aloysha when I said "a bit too good for this world". But I've got the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, and I'll reread it soon.

As for Daniel, he seems to me everything a woman needs in a man - indeed, half the women in the book love him.
