    ...the first Flandry novel was written the year before I was born. A lot changes in 61 years, including the level of craft in science fiction novels.  

    Today's science fiction is (generally) better written -- i.e. more literary -- than most of the stuff I was reading in the 1960s; those really did depend on raw, exuberant sensawonda to get by.

    Also, many SF writers of the old school padded out their pay from writing SF by writing porn (I can't remember if Anderson did this -- old lady brain), but porn and SF were considered to be a one draft effort.  They pay was bad, so the only way to make a living wage was by writing a lot.
