    The most famous female nude, of course, is the Venus de Milo. The story of its discovery, by a farmer tilling his land, is fascinating. I am saddened by the knowledge that a farmer discovering any antiquity today probably would keep it hidden, for fear of losing his land to the State. (I remember visiting one site where the bus driver related a tale of this happening in his village -- that is, of a farmer smashing a marble torso his plow had uncovered.)

    After reading about the Venus, I next searched for the Winged Victory. Thereafter, by happenstance, I discovered the first female nude by Praxiteles, the Knidos Aphrodite, which is known only from copies.
