One of the inward experiences evangelical Christianity reliably delivers is intensity of emotions, a heightened sense of awe at the beauty and wonder and -- yes -- the magic of life and of this world. And it offers an explanation of the universe and of life, and it offers a tribe, and a reason for living, and a solid sense that you're on the right path.

People who are authoritarians will feel right at home in a self-contained circle like that, and never even desire to question any of it. See Professor Altemeyer's book to fully understand how evangelicals are internally wired. They've just got to have a hierarchical structure and an authority figure to command them and make them follow. They need to be sheep. Anything else is just insanity.

    To them.
