Obama believes in trickle-down economics, as do his advisors. They believe they can cut their way to prosperity.

He may not believe in Milton Friedman, but he believes in the people who believe in Friedman, which is just as bad.

Certainly he is using the threat of the sequestered cuts and a perpetual debt ceiling crisis as leverage to force the American people to acquiesce to cuts to the New Deal programs, in a textbook application of Friedman's Shock Doctrine, as Naomi Klein called it.

He has pursued cuts to SS and Medicare with dogged tenacity--indeed, aside from vastly expanding the national security state and the power of the Unitary Executive, this may be the project he has been most committed to during his presidency.

He isn't doing this out of malice; he simply thinks that the patient must be made to swallow the poison for his own good. Austerity will lead to economic growth--that's the belief of his advisors, and he's given them his full support.

You talking about Obama? The dude who goes on and on and on about a "balanced approach", the need for revenue and not just cuts? The "we can't cut our way to prosperity" guy? (BTW that latteer quote, which is directly opposite to your assertion, is widely quoted on the the ol' innertubz - by largely RW sites. Apparently our side doesn't find it a noteworthy comment)
