  •  Didn't Henry Knox technically enlist (4+ / 0-)

in the revolutionary army before rapidly being promoted to general and later to become the first War Secretary? If so, that would put Hagel in good company.

Also, I simply dare Repubs to meaningfully oppose this nomination. It will make them look even more the horse's asses that they are. Obama has given them lots of rope with which to hang themselves here.

sailor in the Navy in the early stages of his military training before he got his pilot's wings.  I suspect other presidents were briefly enlisted men before they got their officers' commissions.

The point is, Hagel was never an officer.

People who become officers after serving some considerable time as enlisted men/women are called "mustangs".  I'm a mustang myself, having gotten a commission in the Naval Reserve after four years of active service as an enlisted man in the Air Force and a few years as an enlisted man in the Air National Guard and the Naval Reserve, but I would hesitate to say simply that I was an enlisted man.

The influence of the [executive] has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished.
