    business prospers if there are so many in poverty. Even if they have no intention of feeding and housing the poor, who's going to buy their products? Wouldn't everyone be better off if unemployment was at 4% - 5%? What am I missing?

      Two ways. First, for those of us who are wage slaves, we are all now deeply in debt thanks to credit cards, etc, which allows us to buy "stuff", but makes us poorer. Second, half of all profits of our multinational corporations come from sales overseas, and those folks are rapidly going into debt as well. Think Europe.
