    Are you kidding? He defeated an incumbent in a primary and almost defeated a Republican for an open seat in a Republican wave year, despite being outspent by a large margin.

      That's all it took.  And the flipside of the "almost defeated" is that a Democrat lost an open Senate race in Pennsylvania, which Dems carry in presidential years by 5-7 points.

    •  I don't think it's any accomplishment... (0+ / 0-) defeat a party-switching incumbent well past his sell-by date, and then lose an open-seat race to someone whose economic philosophy was (and continues to be, of course) a big middle finger to the electorate.  I never belief in finding the silver lining in defeats, but even if I did I sure wouldn't start here.
