was a Republican governor of Montana, killed after a year in office in a plane crash.  He had a reputation as a moderate to liberal Republican.

His successor, Lt. Governor Tim Babcock was described by Democrats as the "real nutter", as he actually proposed a regressive sales tax on Montanans.  This was roundly defeated by the state legislature, and the state still has no sales tax.  He was replaced by Democratic governors, mostly due to the tax issue.

Times really haven't changed all that much, except that no Republican would be caught dead proposing a tax increase today.  Instead, Tea party types advocate for a VAT in place of income taxes, or for the idiotic "Fair Tax" which increases taxes on the poor and middle class, and cuts it on the rich.

The Scout Law (trustworthy, loyal, helpful...) is a GREAT liberal manifesto.
