    •  Yes indeed, free trade has destroyed local (3+ / 0-)

farming in some countries. Like our government subsidizing rice and then selling it at a loss in places in Africa. Wiping out local farming. We need to encourage local farming and stop subsidizing our argriculture sector in competition with locals. Imagine a system where corn is not used as a sweetner. Sugar imports would increase and we could use the corn in other ways. Corn is a staple in many diets in the third world. Corn growers maintain their markets and new markets open up for farmers in equitorial areas. Healthier too. Much of the rice we export can not be used as seed. Local farmers need variety of rice seeds that can produce seed that is usable.

How much of our cheap fattening diet is being paid for on the backs of the developing world? We need fair trade not free trade. In our free trade agreements we prevent other countries from protecting their home markets the way we did and Western Europe did. It is utterly unfair.

      •  There is some pretty intense self-hate here. (0+ / 0-)

There are a LOT of subsidized commodities and products out there competing with ours; it's a surprise that Boeing even exists imo. We are FAR less protectionist than many countries, including Europe. I'm not going to support 'free for thee but not for me' trade at all.

I see what you did there.

    •  And IMF debt (0+ / 0-)

It's difficult to be happy knowing so many suffer. We must unite.
