  •  I've been to your place (23+ / 0-)

No need for overwhelming self-pity.  Really.

I had a nice road trip, around 1981.  In college in the NW, there was a very cold, wet summer.  I headed south, in search of warmth in Sept.  We were on quarters, so classes started at the end of the month.

    • First, went down the coast of Oregon and thru the redwoods.  Beautiful, but still damp and cold.
    • Stop with a childhood friend in San Francisco, and we all know what Mark Twain had to say about that
    • Then over to Las Vegas, where they were breaking a drought with heavy rain.
    • On to the Grand Canyon, where a school friend had taken on a summer seasonal job on the North Rim.  Had to cancel a mule trip down the Canyon, because flash floods had washed out some of the trails.  Helicopters were rescuing some stranded hikers.
    • On to Death Valley.  Finally!  Dry and warm.  And 75 miles to the next gas station, and moonrise over Zabriskie Point: in a place that remote, the moon is an intensely brilliant presence.  And so: mission accomplished!!

What do we make of the contrast between heroic teachers who stand up to a gunman and craven, feckless politicians who won’t stand up to the N.R.A.? -- Nicholas Kristof, NYT --
