I was wondering about how loading up a company with debt is supposed to make money for somebody? It seems counterintuitive without knowing the details.

lay off a bunch of workers and sell some assets so that their profits go up temporarily, raising the stocks, then you sell your share of the stocks before it becomes evident that the diminished company can't earn enough to pay off the debt.

It's cool that if you buy something, it's the object that is in debt and not you.
