  •  Even so (17+ / 0-)

It's kind of amazing that somebody would accusing a person of "trolling" when that person is defending the value of a PhD from a public university with a good reputation.

    •  his beef was with tenure, mine isn't /nt (2+ / 0-)

      •  one PhD crackpot proves tenure a hoax! (10+ / 0-)

to believe this, you'd also have to believe all the crackpots without PhDs are actually actors paid by universities to protect their market share...

      •  Academic freedom only takes you so far (6+ / 0-)

You can get fired from a job with tenure. It just takes a lot of work to make it happen, and usually accusations of doing something very unethical or illegal. (Like relationships with students, embezzlement of federal research funds, or serious plagiarism.)

The big problem is that if you're willing to "play nice" until you get tenure and then decide to become a jackass, there's not much the university can do about it.

As for disparaging the university, picking a few isolated data points still doesn't prove that the university is bad. You can always find enough data points to make similar comments about almost any university.

...and the advantages of the academic freedom of tenure
in what was apparently a snarky tone? Something must be wrong with the site, 'cause it looked like your comment.

"the advantages of the academic freedom of tenure" means "that tenure confers and protects academic freedom" which includes speech rights.

A college or university is a marketplace of ideas, and it cannot fulfill its purposes of transmitting, evaluating, and extending knowledge if it requires conformity with any orthodoxy of content and method. In the words of the United States Supreme Court, “Teachers and students must always remain free to inquire, to study and to evaluate, to gain new maturity and understanding; otherwise our civilization will stagnate and die.”
hope this clears up your understanding of my comment

          •  That does make some sense... (0+ / 0-)

... but it leaves me scratching my head all the same, because the other part of that comment (shows the value of the U of Iowa PhD) was snark... wasn't it?

If I misread you, I apologize; but I can also see how Dale would have misread you as well.
