I have some dear, dear friends. They are extreme rightwing Republican fundamentalist Christian gun nuts, but for some reason they would do anything for me in spite of realizing that we are in agreement on the issues roughly 0% of the time, and are one of nicest couples I know.

Now that stirs up some of the ol' cognitive dissonance, eh?

    But I digress...

This Christmas they bought their 5-month-old granddaughter a gun. Specifically, a Crickett rifle by Keystone Sporting Arms, whose tagline is "My First Rifle". They come in all sorts of cute kiddie colors including sweet pink for all those needful little girls out there, and are completely real, completely deadly .22 caliber weapons.

Now, I don't think that this lucky little girl's parents will be sending her off to the daycare with her piece, and I don't argue against the idea of teaching youngsters basic shooting and even hunting skills with .22-caliber single shot rifles - heck, even I started shooting 'em at age 11 or so at summer camp - but this "gift" was beyond that. It was symbolic - symbolic of a gun culture that has veered so far out of control that I fear for our nation. In fact, these people - and there are many, many like them - recognize and pursue this gifting policy as deeply and crucially symbolic, because, of course, "Obama's comin' fer their guns". This family also gives guns to each other as Christmas presents. Lots of guns, generally at increasing levels of cost and deadliness as the years go by. Bushmasters accessorized for maximum lethality, have, in fact, been on Santa's list in past years.

As I said upthread, "Guns don't kill people, the gun culture kills people."
