  •  I, too, learned to type on a Manual=an old ROYAL (11+ / 0-)

The "Business" students in my class got to use the new Ball electric typewriters. We "Academic" students were told to use the old Manual typewriters on the back row of the classroom.  After all, if you were going to college, why would you need job skills?

When I was invited to submit sections from my disseration to the Grad School Review, I wanted to call back my old High School typing teacher and tell him this is the reason I needed to learn to type.  Publication of my own stuff would have been much easier with stronger typing skills, thank you very much Mr. Miltonburger.

    •  Heh. Underwood Manual Here. When I Went Away (7+ / 0-)

to school, having been forewarned by my parents that there was money to be earned typing other kids' papers, I popped all the pads off the keys and replaced them in alphabetic order, so nobody who didn't touch-type could borrow my typewriter on the sly and do their own. If you didn't touch type it looked so logical.

It earned me spending money from more than one would-be wage thief!

Incidentally I passed middle school typing class with a D doing around 15 wpm, my only course grade below B. My horrific handwriting and several years of applied typing experience bumped me up to 50-60 wpm. That sure came in handy when I got the chance to become a personal computer programmer.

Ignorance is bliss only for the ignorant. The rest of us must suffer the consequences.

did to a fellow employee back in the early 80's. He used the decwriter to enter code instead of the dumb terminals we had. Irritated the hell out of me. He was a hunt -n- pecker typist. So I switched the M and N keys. And then switched them back.

if a habitat is flooded, the improvement for target fishes increases by an infinite percentage...because a habitat suitability index that is even a tiny fraction of 1 is still infinitely higher than zero, which is the suitability of dry land to fishes.
