  •  I got my first personal pc in 1988 (16+ / 0-)

I was working in a small CPA firm at the time who did not have a computer and I was damned if I was going to fall behind the curve because they were stuck in the past.

I discovered my inner geek and found out how to write my own start up routine in DOS and replace the hard drive myself when it went bad.  I also discovered the joys of buying from a small fly by night computer company.  All I can say was not pleasant.

In the CPA office, one of the old codgers found out that I had purchased one for myself and asked me, "What are you going to use it for? Storing recipes?"

Fast forward 6 months and the office finally purchased a pc.  That same old codger was forced to come to me to troubleshoot his computer issues. I took great delight in reminding him about his recipe comment. To his credit, he apologized and acknowledged that I had been smart to learn it on my own.
