    not generation.

As my post elsewhere states, some buildings are not suitable for solar installations - like my house - which due to topography would not be an efficient place to mount solar panels. We just don't get enough sun., and the roof orientation is sub optimal due to the roughly East West run of the street.  OUr roof faces South West, Whereas I get sun in Summer from around 12.pm to 9 pm, my neighbor ( our houses are joined) gets almost zero sun on his roof. Placing a solar panel there would be a total stupidity.

roofs and buildings can be oriented with a proper southern exposure even if... gasp... this means the house placement is adjusted to the sun instead of the street. :-)

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

    •  Yep, it can be really hard to do with older houses (1+ / 0-)

I'm talking about the building code for new houses, though, where integrating solar water heating and heating systems actually ends up saving the homeowner or renters lots of money in the long run.  Germany could be much further along the road with reducing greenhouse gases if it had had a building code that requires this for new housing.

With new housing, roofs can be built to face the sun, no matter what kind of street it is.

Placing a pv solar panel on a roof that receives sun from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. is far from "total stupidity", btw.  Any roof facing south in the northern hemisphere is fine, even it it is SW or SE.
