    Stupid people, when asked to choose between short-term cuts and long-term deficit reduction, tend to choose the former, even if it negates the latter. Sort of like not eating to save money. You'll be richer, but dead.

    And often, it's not stupid so much as lazy and dishonest, on the part of hacks who write to the narrative because it's what sells.
