that suffuses the Congress these days, I'd rather have Sanders there as the last vestige of something resembling a left-of-center voice in the Senate (that is, a left-of-center voice with at least the occasional courage to speak up about it, as opposed to some of his Democratic colleagues who are all too willing to abandon even left-of-center rhetoric when it comes time to close ranks).

He's a politician, and he'd have been beaten over the head for a vote against the dairy subsidies that were part of that deal. He made a political decision to prevent that as a tactic to be used against him if/when he goes up for re-election. I don't fault him for that.

I do fault him for being a bit too willing, too often, to not use what little power his position offers him more effectively and thus to partake a bit too much in the kabuki. But I wouldn't have expected him to vote any other way than he did given the parameters, and I don't hold it against him.

And if you review even a handful of my comments, you'll understand that a certain crowd around here would call me a "purist" (quite incorrectly, and out of an abundance of emotion and a dearth of reason, but there it is nonetheless), so it's not like I'm defending the deal or making excuses for the man, either.
