I googled Transgender and really didn't get an answer - I don't think Wiki knows what the hell they're talking about.

Is Transgender when you have the medical procedure to become, in this case, a Woman? Or is it a state of mind?

    Sorry, just confused........

    •  "Transgender" is an adjective (10+ / 0-)

used to describe a wide variety of people with cross-gender identity or behaviour. People who are transgender often fit into one of the following categories:

      a) Transsexuals. Some transgender people consider ourselves to be members of the sex other than the one we were assigned at birth. We are called transsexuals.

Most transsexuals eventually have hormone treatment to adjust our hormone levels to match our identity (testosterone for trans men, estrogen and anti-androgens for trans women).

Some transsexuals have surgery ("top surgery" to augment or remove breasts, "bottom surgery" to alter genitalia and reproductive organs, "FFS" or facial feminization surgery to alter facial features.)

      b) Crossdressers. Some transgender people like to wear clothing/makeup traditionally worn by the other gender. They are called crossdressers.

Most crossdressers do not have any sort of medical treatment. Most are comfortable with their bodies and prefer to be seen as the gender they were assigned at birth most (or all) of the time.

It is often stated that most crossdressers are heterosexual men, but gay men and women of all orientations may also crossdress. Transsexual men and women may also enjoy crossdressing (which would actually involve clothing assigned to their birth sex).

      c) Drag kings and queens. Some transgender people like to dress in (often exaggerated) clothing and makeup in order to appear somewhat like members of the opposite sex for performance and artistic reasons.

Drag is a gay and lesbian tradition, but there are some straight drag performers. Some transsexual men and women perform in drag before transitioning, and some also perform after transitioning.

A few drag kings and queens have hormone or surgical treatments to augment their stage personae. This group may overlap somewhat with transsexuals, but not all drag performers who have cosmetic treatments are transsexual.

      d) Androgynes, genderqueers, Two-Spirits, and bigender people. Some transgender people do not feel they fit comfortably in either a 'male' or a 'female' box, and would like to be seen as neither gender, or both, or sometimes male and sometimes female. Some Native American transgender people interpret their cross-gender feelings in the context of their culture's traditions, which often involve the idea of having both male and female spirits or something similar, and may identify themselves as Two-Spirits.

Some people in these categories may take hormones and some may have surgeries. Some may consider themselves transsexual as well as androgynous. Others may think that gender is an illusion, medical transition is dangerous and/or misogynist, and passing is anti-feminist and counterproductive.

      e) Transgender people (not otherwise specified). Some transgender people do not feel that any of the other subcategories adequately describes them.

This is a deeply diverse group of people. Some of this group may be indistinguishable from transsexuals (they just don't like the word), while others may simply prefer cross-gender pronouns or clothing or perhaps something even more subtle.
