  •  It's not disagreement (7+ / 0-)

It's bigotry. There are probably some folks out there who 20 years ago said women have inferior brains to men. I'm guessing they would get called on that bullshit. Or people who have made previous anti-African American comments etc.
I disagree about tax policy with some people. People who want to keep me a second class citizen are bigots. There's a difference.

have wished condolences or felt bad when Sen. Byrd died right?  I mean after all, he was a sheet wearing KKK member before I was born.

      •  Well (5+ / 0-)

First, over his entire lifetime, he tried to make an amends for his action. Many accepted it, some did not.

Also, like the case with the Clintons, you have a very mixed bag where we have to accept the good with the bad, because those are the choices we have in politicians.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that very few Americans get. If Byrd had not been a senator, do I think he should have been rejected to give a speech at the inauguration if he made no effort to apologize? Yes!

but not a preacher?  The guy is a preacher by the way.  And  almost certain he is not in the minority of preachers when it comes to gay rights.  I know my pastor hasn't changed and he loves him some Obama.

          •  Don't give a pass (5+ / 0-)

It's an all or nothing thing. Next time around, it will likely be Hillary/Biden -warts and all versus some Republican who is much worse. That is the choice I have to make and it is a complicated choice.

This is easy - for a symbolic event, don't have speakers that will piss off or upset your constituency. Now, yes, we can go to extremes and say racists won't like black people there. Let's say it would be nice if the inaugural event could mirror some of the values which Obama proclaimed during his campaign - meaning tolerance and inclusion.

            •  So symbolism means more to you than policy? Nt (2+ / 0-)

of celebration, in part to thank the constituents who got you there, yes. Again, why is it hard to find a preacher of faith who at least isn't on record trashing gays? There are many to be found.

                •  You think homophobes 'didn't' vote for Obama too? (1+ / 0-)

You think it was all democrats and gay supporters huh?  Obama hit what, 90% if the black vote right?  I promise you at least 70% of them are 'homophobes', the other 30% were under 35, gay blacks or blacks like me who don't dig the denial of civil rights under any circumstances whatsoever because if the history (the arguments I always give to my stubborn aunts and uncles).

                  •  Why? Are you one of them? (3+ / 0-)

You're spending an awful amount of time defending one.

                    •  First lets not get this twisted. My vote helped (3+ / 0-)

gay marriage pass in MD--which passed by a very thin margin in the bluest of blue states.  The great blue crab state of Maryland.  But I'm sure I have a little homophobe in me.  It's not like I woke up and was like, I'm okay with two of the same sex together. Again, I've just never been down for denying every tax payi citizen basic rights.  And any straight person that says that they don't have a touch of homophobe in them is a fucking liar.  They all rainbow till you hit a nerve.  My old job was so super liberal.  My boss was gay, they all loved Obama, a bunch of trial lawyers.  Or so I thought.  My boss adopted a baby and that nerve was hit.  You could cut the discomfort with a knife.  Everyone was fine he was gay, fine he was married.  It was peace, love and liberal hair grease, till what was their nerve hit.  Now of course they fakes the funk and still smiled that same smile, but behind his back, totally uncomfortable.  Now, what I'm defending is Obama's prerogative to be as inclusive as he can want to be at his final inauguration.  And I'm defending the notion that people can change, broaden after 20 years.  The country certainly did.  It's got O'Reilly looking down a bottle every night.

                  •  That doesn't mean they need to be showcased (4+ / 0-)

I know people, sadly, who still use the N-word but like Obama. I know, sadly, some people who don't like Mexicans. I have known people who treat women with less than respect.
None of these people should be featured at a historic, iconic event  such as this.

and Fox News will be there.  And a lotta black clergy on the stage that went out and fought against marriage equality. I'm telling you, you are two steps from saying Obama has no business being at his inauguration too. Just what, 2-2 1/2 years ago he said marriage was between a man and woman.  That certai my wasn't representative of Democrats, right? Or was it?  A la DOMA-DADT <--- Dems built that.

                      •  You keep doing this thing - pretending DADT was (1+ / 0-)

                        It's really annoying and counter-factual.

featured? who? name one single person, other than the homophobe that the obama administration has tapped for the benediction, that falls into this category.

      •  how would you have felt, as an AA... (7+ / 0-)

if george wallace had delivered the eulogy at dr. king's funeral and nothing anybody from the aa community said could change it?

i ask you this in all sincerity, hoping you'll see how important this is to the glbt community.

        •  So Obama is Harvey Milk's family? (2+ / 0-)

Your analogy is confused on so many levels ...

Look, you're upset. Fine, indulge your emotions, ignore the fact that the guy's homophobic comments were made 20 years ago and the subject won't be LGBT and he isn't speaking at Harvey Milk's wake or is in any other way analogous to your setup, and be upset if it makes you feel better. Then get back to work helping to make more of the sort of gains we have seen over the last 4 years.
