  •  I thought (and continue to think) the same thing.. (7+ / 0-)

I feel like the selection of this speaker is a huge slap in the face to one of the constituencies that is responsible for re-electing the President.

I like how you addressed the administration's own "cancelling one another out" machination...As you correctly point out, selecting a Gay Cuban Poet doesn't make up for selecting a homopobic ass-wad to make the benediction...

I also find it a little distressing that the President didn't seem able to keep Susan Rice in the hopper (not that I am necessarily a fan), but he is willing to go to the mat for Chuck Hagel (who I don't care for either).  So, are we to understand that it is ok to toss the African-American woman to the side for pure bullshit while retaining the old white man who actually said some of the things that he is alleged to have said (at least in term of his anti-gay statement about former Ambassador Hormel).  While the reality may be more complicated, on the surface, this isn't all that different from Romney's "binders full of women" gaffaw...except that the President didn't seem to find any women in his binders that he likes. And really, in the entire country, a Republican, Chuck Hagel, is the only person capable of running the Department of Defense?  Bullshit.

I think that the coalition that elected (and re-elected) this President need to start really holding his feet to the fire..I think that everyone has been fairly careful not to be overly critical of the President (in some quarters), but I feel like we have been silent and complacent for far too long.
