characteristic of this president. He does something hurtful or offensive, and when he's called on it, he gets annoyed and blames the offended party for being oversensitive and tells them to calm down.

Obama has gaslighted various parts of the Democratic base for most of his first term: homosexuals, women, health care advocates, labor unions, etc. That he has been reelected with a popular majority despite so doing is a mark of his political skill and the fact that the Republicans are so god-awful, not his performance on the issues that matter to his base.

And when his arm was twisted by LGBT activists and he was faced with losing a sizable chunk of his donor base or making some modest concessions, of course he wants all the credit for being the most awesome president on gay rights evah, as if he didn't have to be railroaded into doing it every single step of the way.

The message sent by this pick for his benediction is very clear: get to the back of the bus, you're harshing my bipartisan mellow. I'd much rather hang out with the religious fundies than with you. I've been reelected, I no longer need a single thin dime from you, so get off my back, man!

Whatever this president has done on gay rights does not come out of any strong belief or personal commitment Obama has to civil rights or equality, but purely out of political necessity.

As far as I can tell, Obama is strongly passionate about two issues: expansion of executive power and deficit reduction. In those areas he has a clear program and is willing to risk considerable political capital in pursuing them.

When it comes to the issues the Dem base is interested in, he's all like, talk to the hand, unless you force him. And forcing him is hard, because he's very reluctant to do anything that would piss off the Beltway pooh-bahs.
