  •  Rove and NRA==Money in toilet! (1+ / 0-)

    Rachel had a great graph last night, showing the relative effectiveness of dollars donated to Rove and the NRA in sponsoring candidates compared to other GOP super pacs. They were in the 1 percent range--money in the toilet.

    Sent me to bed wondering why. I think they are zealots, and simply think others are zealots like them. Instead of trying to get in the heads of those who aren't planning to vote their way, they try to force others to think like they do. It doesn't work.

    There's a lesson here. I'm reading "Deer Hunting with Jesus" where the author is truly trying to get in the heads of those who are very poor and vote Republican. And one of his major points of division from standard progressive "doctrine" is gun control. A fact he points out: Hand guns protect a lot of poor women from violent men. Another: The tradition of gun ownership (handed down from generations) is truly not appreciated by "urban" liberals.

    Of course, this isn't a "scientific" analysis, and since Karl Rove is on the NRA Board, even Rachel's graph had a pretty significant analytical flaw. But we really need to listen as we gear up for 14.

      who feel that handgun possession gives them a sense of protection that they do not want to give up. There is no slippery slope. The debate is over assault weapons, high volume magazines and gun show exemptions.

        I totally agree with you about the logic of banning weapons that are only designed for military use. But I was in a discussion group last week where at least half the participants were shocked when we said we had licenced handguns. I have personally encountered many liberal thinkers who want all handguns banned, period (a la Canada). Only need to repeat their comments a few times in the red echo chamber.

          firearm ban.  So while you might encounter those  who advocate that it would never happen.  Understand that in the face of that gun owners seem to up their defiance.  There really is no slippery slope though because that position would never pass.
