  •  Our best hope... (0+ / 0-) grim as it may be, would be for a world-wide super plague to wipe out 3/4 of us within the next decade or two.  The survivors one might hope, could then start fresh, with a new and lasting appreciation for just how fragile continued human existence might be.

    There has been a lot of talk in the comments to this excellent and provocative post about this or that scenario for the final collapse of our world.  Some say it will be ocean acidification; some say the our food plants will stop photosynthesizing; some say the economy will collapse first and can't imagine a human world without money and banks.

    Here's my prediction:  When it gets really bad we will be brutally reminded that there are still 19,000 nuclear warheads ready to finish off the job.  (source: Ploughshares Fund)

    Come back in 20,000 years after all the radioactivity has decayed and I can guarantee there won't be anything but cockroaches.
