A few hundred years later the Papacy had the great notion to equate Mary Magdelaine and the "Sinner Woman" in The Gospel of Mathew  as the same person --- and to assert/assume  that her Sin was prostitution.

The Pagan Romans had used "Harlotization" to discredit Empresses  they needed to blame for their Emperors' shortcomings ... ie: Messillena and  Theodora ...  why shouldn't the Christian authorities use the technique to get rid of inconvenient (apocryphal)  Gospels ?

Truth is what the Masses can be persuaded to believe

    •  That doesn't affect my main point (0+ / 0-)

Which was that prostitution almost certainly was tolerated under Second Temple Judaism.

      •  For all we both know .... you may be right (0+ / 0-)

Prostitution is certainly PRACTICED in most times and places, particularly in cities and along trade routes.

And pretty much all cultures having cities and trade routes are and have been patriarchal.

So, in the broadest and most general way, there's no way you could be "wrong," exactly.

But maybe you had some specific and supportable point to make ?? l
