    Obama swept the board with battleground states, and he still ended up with only 26 states. The Senate favors smaller, conservative states whereas large states like California and New York are at a disadvantage. The Republicans have a structural advantage in the Senate.

    The Republicans have a structural advantage in the House due to redistricting, and a structural advantage in state legislatures for the same reason.

    The Democrats got lucky now for four election cycles in a row in the Senate. 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2012. But good luck can only last so long when the rules are stacked against you.
