  •  I have been self employed for years, and (none)
    like your girlfriend do not receive any benifits from anyone that I contract from. But this is part of being self employed, and the way around it is to charge more - a lot more. It is very likely that your girlfriend now makes more per hour/week/annum than she would if she were a regular employee.

    Health insurance, sick and vacation days, and the 6.2% SE tax add up, but I simply figure them into my rate. The other plus is that one generally doesn't get involved in all the bullshit associated with the job.

    The only real downside is that one usually doesn't qualify for unemployment insurance.
