They make regular safety announcements on the radioduring moose migration season in the north country. 50% of vehicle occupants are killed in moose encounters.  Adult males, in particular, are very tall with a very large, heavy body, suspended 8 feet off the ground. In most moose accidents, the vehicle knocks the legs out from under that very large body, which lands on the passenger compartment of the car. The moose's ribs become daggers.

The rule: SLOW DOWN in moose country during migration season, and take those Moose Crossing signs very seriously.

Moose are also very dark. A friend describes seeing a moose on a dark road at night as follows: "a moose shaped place so dark, it was like the dark was missing."
