    Staff drawdown
The embassy formally opened over a year behind schedule in January of 2009 with a staff of over 16,000 people, mostly contractors, but including 2,000 diplomats. In February 2012, weeks after the final departure of US Military forces from Iraq, the State Department announced that the staff would be greatly reduced due to budget concerns and a re-evaluation of diplomatic strategy in Iraq, in light of the military withdrawal.[15]

      •  2000 "diplomats"? (0+ / 0-)

Yeah, right, uhuh. To process all those visa applications and cultural exchange programs. Not, obviously, to help oil companies or engage in spying and the coordination of covert ops. Only a cynic would believe we're that duplicitous.

We're talking about Iraq, a relatively minor country as far as our global state interests and needs are concerned, compared to China, Russia, India, Japan, Turkey, the EU, etc. I.e. first or nearly first world countries with advanced and complex industrialized economies with whom we have diverse trade, economic, financial, cultural, etc. relations. Iraq doesn't even begin to rank on these. I hope that someday it will, and to the extent that our diplomatic mission to it is trying to help bring this about, more power to it. But even such a goal, plus the various other diplomatic demands that a country like Iraq might place upon us, couldn't possibly require even 1000 diplomats. These people are spies and covert operatives and planners. Iraq has become our major forward base in the mideast, North Africa and Central Asia. Plus, a corporate base for all the Shock Doctrine operatives trying to take over the region economically.

    •  Those are all staff, not just security. (0+ / 0-)

The number of armed military contractors is a fraction of that number, which also includes cooks and truck drivers and IT help and whatnot.
