The Tax credit only applies in the year the car is purchased.  No carryover.  I'm doing some maneuvering to inflate my tax liability this year - taking money I don't need out of my retirement plan, paying tax on it and putting it into a Roth IRA - in order to be able to use the tax credit.  I would pay tax on that money sometime, better use it now when I can get the credit.
However, we also put on solar panels this year and that tax credit can be carried over.
