    sorry I was not more specific but in the US it is one crop per year while there are two in more tropical countries.  Also there is some qualitative difference in the sunlight available there

      although as far as sunlight goes, one might think that the one crop per year in the US would actually get more of that considering that there are more hours of sunlight in the summer the farther you go from the equator . . .

        but the angle of the sun is also important; for example,  the sun is actually closer to the earth in the winter which is the opposite of what "conventional wisdom" would expect
