was probably going to jail for a very long time for downloading academic papers after being financially ruined by the need to mount a million dollar defense to fight the united states government? maybe a contributing factor to the depression?

war is immoral. both parties are now fully complicit in the wars. bring everyone home. get to work.

See the articles, linked above.  His issues with depression went back much farther than this case.

commits suicide, it seems reasonable to assume that was a factor in why they did it. (And indeed, his family and partner now have made a statement saying that was indeed why he did it.) To not mention the situation at all does seem at least slightly dishonest.

I mean, right above the fold I pointed out he was awaiting trial.  Of course that puts pressure on, but this is where we sometimes mistake how this works.

Of course it was a stress that helped lead to this as a contributing factor.  But even his attorneys believed this would be stalled out or take a considerable amount of time.  This wasn't going to be a one-day trial, etc.

When someone who has depressive issues faces them, they face them differently, that's all.

    •  He believed studies funded by public money should (4+ / 0-)

      be available to the public.

I salute Aaron Swartz for his convictions and his courage.  He must have felt abandoned and alone.

So, so sad to lose this brilliant, principled young man.

    •  I'm glad he did what he did. (1+ / 0-)

Most of that ended up going public domain anyway. Aaron was sharing valuable academic knowledge with the public, which is a good thing and silly to get mad about.
