in terms of race, and the fact that whites are already privileged and have been dominant in our society, combine to make it a racist idea.

    •  The fact that whites are... (0+ / 0-)

... privileged and dominant in our society has absolutely nothing to do with how many whites there are.

Or do you imagine that a falling white population will help put an end to racism? If so, you're dreaming.

white people may be having lower birth rates. I'm talking about making an issue of it in those terms, or saying it is a problem.

me clue you in: the "survival of the white race" is, in so many words, the concern of neo-Nazis and Klan members.  They get people riled up about the imaginary extinction of the imaginary race known (in the U.S.) as "white people", and then point at other racial groups, and especially mixed-race people, as a threat to white people's survival.

But there are hundreds of millions of "white" people in the world; we are not an endangered species.  And, it is racist to assume that we need to be the largest racial group in the U.S., which is what the white supremacists really want.

Now, there may be ethnicities that are threatened with disappearing, but that's a different issue.  There is no such thing as "the white race" per se; who is included, at various times, has, or has not, included Irish people, Jewish people, Polish people, Italians... you see where I'm going with this?

I say I am "white" because it is the best shorthand I have both for what I know about my ethnic background (various European) and for my social privilege within U.S. society.  This is not privilege I choose, or can refuse; it is there, in who is perceived, among other things, as "normal" or a "real American".

Perhaps you feel a sense of wanting your own ethnicity/ies to continue, as represented by your language, stories, songs, decorations, holidays, etc. etc.  And that's all fine.  But if you tie that up with wanting your descendants, or the descendants of your ethnic peers, to be the same shade, hair texture/color, eye color, facial shape, etc., as you... then yes, that is racist.
