I had a long ethnography (it eventually appeared as Lost People: Magic and the Legacy of Slavery in Madagascar) that I had to wait almost ten years to publish because it was too long. I remember during that time whenever I would try to put the manuscript on reserve at Yale for one of my courses, they wouldn't do it unless I produced a notarized statement avowing that I hadn't sold the rights to any publisher. And this was the author personally trying to make his own book available to students of one of his own classes! At one point I remarked to the librarian, "I thought copyright rules were supposed to be there to protect the author!" "They are!" she insisted, apparently unable to see the absurdity of the situation.
