always makes me want chili.  Yum.

I'm really, really beginning to hate reality TV.  People make choices, and I get that, but I feel like TLC and Oxygen and others are exploiting people for pure profit.  For shows like "The Bad Girls Club," or MTV's "The Real World," they throw together people who they know have problems and then pour liquor all over it before lighting the fire.  I hate the feeling that we, as viewers, are supposed to look at these shows like "Look how crazy these people are!" and push them more and more into a corner.  The racial component is huge, and even more egregious in my opinion.  We're supposed to laugh at, and mock, and deride, and when that's directed at a minority it's supposed to be okay because hey, they do have Honey Boo Boo, right?  So it's only fair, right?  Ugh.

Speaking of MLKJr Day, I am moving my work's server infrastructure this weekend (I work in IT).  During one of our first meetings, we talked about using this weekend because the state agency I work for [PS if anyone out there knows who it is, don't say it, thanks] doesn't run production on MLKJr Day, so we planned to do the move Saturday which would give us extra time, etc.  While discussing this, someone mentioned that we couldn't do any work on MLKJr Day itself.  Everyone laughed about it, saying it would be an "HR nightmare" and that people would "never work on that day, if you know what I mean."  There was a lot of winking and secondary communication going on to indicate they were trying to say something without directly saying it, because directly saying it would be racist, don'tyouknow.  Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but as a white woman in a room with a bunch of white men who seemed to 'get' this joke, it seemed really racist to me.  Like I was supposed to understand, I'm white, right?  I'm supposed to laugh along with them.

I was pretty disgusted, to the point I haven't mentioned it to anything/anything until now (and this was two months ago).  Of course, I could go on about how I'm talked down to and disregarded most days because, you know, the woman in the IT department must just do help desk tickets or answer phones or something, she can't possibly be the network and infrastructure lead, who is also leading the project because she has the most experience in infrastructure despite starting this past September.  BUT that is a diary for another group.

Thanks for the awesome diary Denise.
