    A couple of days ago, I was heading to my credit union's ATM machine and a woman behind me was talking loudly on her cell. She was complaining about the foreign language program in our school system (and I agree that it's totally inadequate), saying that her son who had become fairly proficient in Spanish somewhere else, lost it all when he came here. She said "his teacher, a black woman, had an awful accent and ruined Spanish for him."
    I kept thinking "what does the teacher being black have to do with her teaching ability or her accent -- it's irrelevant!" But of course to this woman, it was the explanation for the bad teaching and bad accent.
    I bet you anything that this woman voted for Obama -- our area is notoriously liberal and Obama got something like 70% of the vote in our county. I'm sure this woman would never think of herself as racist, and yet, there it was right in front of her.
