    Some of the real opportunities (and actualities) for alliances between black and white people in the U.S. are now within spaces where both groups of people have a real and common stake in the outcome--say, for example, in union organizing.
    I would not go so far as to claim that it always is the case; the example Sis Dee brings forward below of DRUM shows that it has not been, and that's far from the only example available. And I also agree that there is a "wage" so to speak gained through "whiteness" as Roediger argues, in the very fine work that TomP mentions below.
    But determining where the possibility of such alliances does exist remains an essential goal, and I would not write off the entire white working class as being fully in the thrall of racism.
    This, of course, is a topic we could discuss for a long, long time....
