4 out of 5 of the bullet list of suggestions to replace the "unforced errors" are basically the Democratic approach to government and these issues. (we of course have slightly different ideas re. ways of accomplishing these goals and therein lies the rub...)

IMHO, the real problem we on this side of the political divide face is communicating that these are in fact OUR policies and belief system and countering the decades of demonization of "Liberals" that Luntz and the 24-7 RW Noise machine have accomplished much too successfully.

while this is a good diary, I've seen dozens and dozens of diaries discussing how the Republicans need to change to win.

How about discussing how we can win? and keep winning?

no man is completely worthless, he can always be used as a bad example.

    •  this IS how we win... (8+ / 0-)

we make sure that, when they try to frame the debate in Democratic terms, we haul up the reality of teabagger positions. Mittens tried this, to be a wingnut in the primaries, and "etch-a-sketch" it all in the general. Pump money into winnable districts and point out the conflict...rile up the teabaggers so they abandon their candidate. Very much a winning strategy in the face of the gerrymandered advantages the Republicans have in an overwhelming number of states.

    •  He doesn't suggest they change (11+ / 0-)

      He suggests they talk differently.

They're not supposed to save the social insurance programs: they're supposed to say that they're doing it ("we had to destroy the village in order to save it").

      •  Exactly: sound like Ds but continue the Tea-jihad (5+ / 0-)

        is what Luntz is saying.

IOW, we have won the policy fight on many issue.  Luntz just wants to fuzz the language up so Thugs can steal our voters.

As for T-baggers... he's counting on hunger, dogwhistles, whisper campaigns, plausible deniability and the perfidy of the media to keep them happy.  Given the last 40 years, I'd say he's right on that, especially the media.

It is absolutely critical webe prepared to pt out how every Thug 'says one thing but does something else entirely', 'is just saying what you want to hear but doing the same old T-bag'.  IOW, 'is just lying and playing you for a fool.'

That is a win-win for Ds.  It locks in the consensus in favor of Ds by ptg out the even Thugs are saying they want what Ds are selling, while forcing Thugs to choose b/t merely paying lip service to it or actually moving left. (I'm sure we know which they'll choose.)

This will be difficiult as it requires a degree of discipline Ds rarely show, as well as being on guard and punishing by primarying D hypocrits who see it as opportunity to cash in by selling out on policy.

Of course we win on all the policy issues.  Every survey about teal issues shows people side with the Democrats.  But as the diarist says, that's not how people vote.  We need to appeal to people's emotions with honest feelings about right and wrong.  We have two people that can do that we'll: WJC and BHO.  Hope they will take this on.

          I'm still mad about Nixon.

and I'll show you what you value.'

Its not enough to be right, if the other side fools enough voters into thinking they'll do the right things too.

Yes, when you're trying to convince, you go for emotions.  'Cause policy discussion is hard to do in 30 sec TV ads.  But we will lose if we only think we have to jerk tears harder than the other side and ignore the reality of what they are doing: lying and playng voters for fools.

2012 proved one thing: enough voters are not stupid that they understand they are being lied to and played when that is pt'ed out.  The 'consultant class' like Luntz makes its living by lying and playing the voters, so it is not surprising that the common wisdom was 2012 could never happen.

The irony is, Clinton got elected twice by pt'g out how Thugs were lying and playing voters (in a nicer way, of course, but what do u think 'It's the Economy, stupid' really meant? Clue, the other guy was all Flag and 1000 pts of Light and bs.)  Heck, even Gore won the majority of votes.  The last 2 weeks of his campaign was essentially what big fat liar Dumbya was (history proved that absolutely correct).
