  •  I work with a local dog rescue group. (8+ / 0-)

We get donated dog food from time to time from some of the chain pet food stores in our area, and it goes to feeding some of the rescue dogs we have, and the donors also send some to other groups and the local humane society from time to time.
Your friends should make some phone calls to local shelters and the humane society and see if they can get some help with food and other pet supplies.    There are lots of organizations that are aware of the needs of pets on an ongoing basis.   We also do fundraisers on a regular basis and use the money to help rescue dogs with vet and other care.
Most dog breed rescue groups have an on-line presence, and they can contacting some of the rescue groups for both help in finding permanent homes for the animals, as well as donations to help maintain them.    They may be able to set themselves up as an official animal sanctuary and more easily find the means to do what they clearly want to be doing!!.
God bless them for their open hearts!
