    have them get you the giant cans of tuna.  Best protein for the price, if you can keep it sealed and refrigerated.

      per pound - chicken is much cheaper than tuna per pound. Tuna are overfished.

      yeah - when I lived in California - rent was definitely the problem. She's talking about a $35/week food budget, then the man above cited a $1000/month hotel room. It is hard to move once you're already in a situation, but the Central Valley is much cheaper and culturally almost a different state.

      I was always able to eat okay on a low budget, without eating all carbohydrates. Go to Grocery Outlet (where some stuff is a great deal, and some stuff is not), and load up on some of their failed products. You can keep breakfast under $1 pretty easily. If you have access to a stove, cook some dry beans, make some humus in a blender from garbanzos, go to a mexican grocery store and load up on the discounted fruits and vegetables.
