  •  If you can get to a farmer's market (4+ / 0-)

at the very close of the day, you can often get local, organic produce for very little, or even free.  They don't want to carry it home again.  Sometimes it's a little imperfect, but still tasty and nutritious.  I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford produce, but if I want to can or freeze stuff in bulk, I often go at the end and get it half-off or even lower.

In our area (San Jose) there are a lot of fruit trees in people's yards that go unpicked--I think many people would be willing to let you pick a bunch of produce, either for nothing, or in exchange for some of the picked fruit, if you asked.  I've traded lemons off a neighbor's tree, for a couple of cups of lemon curd....

The hardest part of living off almost nothing, is that you can't do the economical thing and purchase in bulk--either because you don't have the lump sum to do so, or because as many others have noted, you don't have a way to prepare or store it.

I hope things get better for everyone who is having trouble finding enough to eat.
