    but the area is in the floodplain of the Skagit River, which has brought rich alluvial soil to the area for millenia. It's also why, when you go there, you'll see houses with stilts for a first floor - since it can flood too.

    Nearby in the summer you may see fields with odd-looking plants - among them the more easily recognized are beets and cabbage family plants - probably many others - being grown for their seed!
