  •  Conservatives are obsessed with purity. (10+ / 0-)

I spent several hours today taking quizzes at the your morals site (it is a blast). They ask people to self-identify as liberal or conservative and report results broken down that way for most of their quizzes.

Based on their results, liberals don't moralize much about issues like other people's sex lives, religion, and marriage status. Conservatives think that this is all terribly important.

The medieval church burned heretics at the stake because if they didn't purify the community God would punish everyone. In this way of thinking someone who disgusts you should also terrify you. Disgust is God's way of warning you that immediate action is required, on pain of eternal damnation.

    •  Why is it that people who are afraid of hellfire (3+ / 0-)

      want to burn other people?

      •  It is logical, if you accept their premises. (2+ / 0-)

        1) God hates sinners.
        2) God hates people who tolerate sinners.
        3) Sinners are better off dead.

There really is no down side to burning people at the stake if you believe all of this. It is a win/win/win solution.

Of course, if you are one of those sinners and don't buy into all of those premises, your mileage may vary.

    •  Haidt's work on morality (3+ / 0-)

Andrew and I must have seen the same diary. ..

Haidt identifies several components to morality.  If you look at the charts, it shows substantial difference between liberals and conservatives on what they view as most important.  Liberals typically value care and fairness highest, while conservatives value authority and purity; with purity being the psychology of disgust and contamination.  That might be part of what is captured in transmisia.

We need to name things in order to talk about them.  The closer we can get to having the right words, the better we can communicate and gain understanding.  Very well done, Mercury.

I always prefer to believe the best of everybody, it saves so much trouble.
