I read Devil in the White City a couple of years ago and loved it.  (My daughter heard an interview with Larson on the radio promoting the book and thought it sounded interesting, so she got one for herself and one for my birthday.  She confessed recently she still hasn't read hers yet.)
I have a transcription of a journal my grandmother's adoptive father kept in that period of time that recounts a trip to the Exposition and mentions going up in the Ferris wheel.  It's one of those matter-of-fact 19th-century midwestern farmer's journals, so it doesn't get too descriptive or effusive, but the fact that it got a mention indicates it was a pretty big deal.

The whole place must have been so new and different for the visitors. Electric lights were all over, unlike in most of the rest of the city. People were there from foreign lands.

I'm glad you stopped and enjoyed the diary.

...as I said, he doesn't do much in the way of elaboration.  I just looked it up.  His September 4, 1893 entry says they visited the world's fair and stayed the night in Harvey (which would have been a fair commute in those days.)  The Ferris wheel entry on September 6 reads, in total, "Went up in Ferris Wheel. Staid for Illumination at night."  It's left to the reader to fill in the details, I guess. ;-)
