perhaps have the slots for them welded up on rifles that have them. They're even easier to reload with than with magazines, provided they haven't been reused to such an extent that the rounds slip out of them easily.

When I'm at the range, I find reloading my 10 round SKS much faster and more pleasant than reloading my AK-alike with magazines even, not to mention reloading the mags, even though I have a little speed loader doohicky that slips over the mags and accepts the same stripper clips I use in the SKS.

A 5-round SKS would reload almost as easily. Or more so, since the clips would be shorter and even more manageable.

    •  I echo you sentaments (6+ / 0-)

I have a Mosin Nagant.  It takes 5 round chargers.  I know that its possible to keep up a fairly high rate of accurate fire with a 19th century-designed repeater rifle.

I don't buy the magazine restriction argument for that reason.  Strangely the one advantage of a spree shooter having a 100-round drum magazine is they are notoriously unreliable and prone to jamming.

thought, would make a great target.

I have a 75 rd drum for my AK. I have loaded it up about two times, very laboriously because it is not one of the types with a removable cover. Plus it gives you a pretty good isometric workout if you slow fire the weapon in a standing position.

Lastly, one time after I had managed to stuff 75 rounds into the thing the little pin holding the one-way gate at the mouth of the magazine came out, and all 75 rounds summarily departed the magazine looking for every nook and cranny of the cab of my pickup. lol. I fixed it easily, but haven't used it for anything but a paperweight since.

      •  Loughner was caught... (0+ / 0-)

...because he was trying to load a 33-round 9mm magazine into his Glock. Turned out to be an awkward operation, which gave good people time to subdue him.

If he had tried to load a standard magazine for his weapon, things might have been worse.
