  •  Occupy made the same mistake we did in the 60's (4+ / 0-)

Street action isn't enough.  And it's far worse now because terrorism has become an excuse for police state repression of even peaceful dissent.

Movements have to move people who are middle-aged.  They have to motivate people where they live.  That was the brilliance of the Republicans move into the churches.  It's of very limited use to occupy some urban park where no one in the suburbs ever goes.

How do we occupy the suburbs?  I wish I had an answer.

in some fashion, it almost certainly will not involve camps.

Engaging the suburbs will take with multiple, pre-organized roles that people can plug into, either ad hoc or ongoing, remotely or on site. Successful volunteer organizations do this.

I guess my point is simply that you simply can't get there from here through electoral politics alone. It's going to take additional kinds of massive pressure on the government AND direct action against private players to make it happen.

      •  There used to be an organization that worked (1+ / 0-)

in working class areas and got support in the suburbs. It was called ACORN. It organized in cities but canvassed for donations in the suburbs.

Stupid liberal foundations de-funded it before O'Keefe video was debunked. I hate O'Keefe but too much of the damage was self-inflicted.

I give credit to Alan Grayson and Eric Holder who both said publicly that Congress' action was a bill of attainder.

It would be great to marry the ACORN model with the OFA model.

    •  There was plenty of repression in 1960s (0+ / 0-)

There was COINTELPRO. There was CIA involvement in the US, in violation of its charter. Sound familiar?
