  •  Thank you, Steven (9+ / 0-)

This was actually a sort of rush job, and I appreciate the compliment.

    •  Rush jobs are the best kind. Seriously. (7+ / 0-)

Too much editing spoils the broth.

That may be a minority opinion.

      •  I don't know if this is your process (5+ / 0-)

Finding the stuff at youtube takes probably 70% of the time I spend on these. I load the videos, and then I write. When the editing process for the diary starts to reject things I've loaded (it really wouldn't show the fourth movement of the London symphony), THEN I scramble.

          1. I search for youtubes of the music I'm looking for.  Bookmark 'em.  Make sure they are embeddable (because oh, I've had embarrassments discovering at the last minute that a good clip was embed disabled.)

          So that's step 1.

          2. I listen to it and think about what it reminds me of.  Do a bunch of googling and bookmarking of any interesting text, usually just stealing shamelessly from wikipedia.

          3. Write everything I want to say IN MY HEAD while i'm trying to go to bed, as a consequence of insomnia.  The harder it is for me to sleep, the better the diary the next day!

          4. Drink coffee on thursday.  Pee.  Sit down and paste in the embeds and look for something to put at the top as an appetizer, some kind of cool pic or appetizer youtube clip.

          5. Start writing about the music and try to slip in some dumb anecdote about my life.  Actually, I don't have to try.  I just do it and keep writing and figure if I say too much I can cut things out.

          6. Try to fix the glaring errors.

          7. Post it.

          8. Edit and Re-Fix the fine details while people are still reading the diary.

That's my technique.  Step 3 is probably the hard one to duplicate.

it's because there are special characters in the embed code that the Dailykos editor doesn't like.  I've been able to get them to work, before, by editing the diary and fixing the embed code characters.  I can't remember the details right now, but it took some dicking around.

You can always upload your own Vaughan Williams clips.  It's best to do that a day or two ahead of the diary, because you never know how Youtube is going to react.  Usually it gives you a "third party copyright" warning the next day and asks you to confirm that the clip belongs to some music rights organization (I've fought them on this before, but I don't anymore, because they don't seem to care.) After that, they leave your clip up, but they also include little pop up ads, which are no big deal.

If you want me to upload to youtube the RVW's London Symphony, let me know.
